Making The Case For A Saint: Blessed Miriam Teresa Travels to Rome
October 03, 2025
Last month, Sister Maureen Corcoran '65, SC, and Shannon Hoffman '16 had the incredible opportunity to travel to Rome for the Jubilee of Youth — an experience that, as they share, “will stay with us forever.” It was Sister Maureen's second time in the Eternal City, and they describe it as a blessing to witness its beauty come alive through the energy, faith, and joy of young people from all over the world. “Rome pulsed with music, dancing, and prayer, each moment a powerful testament to the vibrant spirit of our Church’s youth,” says Shannon.
The two were deeply moved by the passion and hope they witnessed — from quiet moments of reflection to joyful celebrations in the streets. On July 29, they were near Saint Peter’s Square for the Opening Mass, hearing the voices of thousands of youth. At the conclusion, a wave of joy swept the square as Pope Leo surprised everyone by coming among the crowd in his popemobile.
The next morning, they returned to the square for a Papal Audience, blessed to be early enough for a front-row spot. Watching the Holy Father drive by less than ten feet away was surreal and humbling — a once-in-a-lifetime moment that filled them with gratitude and strengthened their faith.
That same evening, they gathered at the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls for a prayer service sponsored by the USCCB. This included a Procession of Relics honoring American Saints and Blesseds. “One of the most unforgettable moments was carrying the relic of our own Blessed Miriam Teresa Demjanovich, SC, and placing it alongside the relic of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton,” says Sister Maureen. There was adoration, witness talks, and heartfelt prayer for the Church and its future.
As they reflect on this pilgrimage, both Sister Maureen and Shannon are filled with renewed faith and confidence. The future of the Church, they affirm, is not only in good hands — it is alive, growing, and radiant with God’s goodness. These days in Rome will remain etched in their hearts forever.
Fun Fact: Pope Leo was elected Pope on Blessed Miriam Teresa's feast day, May 8, so the bells of Holy Family Chapel rang twice that day in 2025!
